 |
| Jun 8, 2005 | | While putting Nicolas to bed, Mommy noticed that his stuffed toy puppy dog was missing and asked if he wanted to go get it. He got his puppy but also managed to get a little truck too. Because he was taking a long time, Mommy came out to check on him. When he saw her, Nicolas held out his puppy with his right hand, but kept his left hand behind his back (where he was hiding the truck) and said, "Look! I found my puppy." Mommy asked, "What's in your other hand?" Nicolas started to pull out his truck hand, but realized he would be found out. So he extended his puppy hand toward her again and said, "I found my puppy." He is definitely starting to show typical five-year-old behavior! |
 | | |
| Jun 3, 2005 | | In another bold move to face his fears, Nicolas voluntarily used the vacuum cleaner. |
 | | |
| May 29, 2005 | | In another illustration of his understanding sequence of events, Nicolas finished Mommy's sentence as she explained the plans for the afternoon. At lunch she said, "You need to finish eating ..." Nicolas stepped in and said, "So we can go to the farm." Then he started to sing Old MacDonald Had a Farm. |
 | | |
| May 28, 2005 | | Daddy had to leave before the boys' bedtime to go and take care of Grandma and Grandpa's dog because they were out of town. Daddy went to where Nicolas was playing to tell him where he was going. Understanding cause and effect and sequence of events is often a challenge for kids on the spectrum. However, Nicolas replied by saying goodbye, and then he said, "See you (in the) morning." |
 | | |
| May 16, 2005 | | Mommy was reminding Nicolas about his upcoming cranio-sacral appointment. During several past appointments, he would move the therapists hands to his stomach, presumably because the light touch had some healing effect for him. During the discussion with Mommy about his upcoming appointment, Nicolas put his hand on his stomach and said, "Ms. Suzanne (will) make it all better." |
 | | |
| May 10, 2005 | | Nicolas took a surprise hearing test today all by himself! He had a follow-up appointment with the ENT after undergoing a round of anti-biotics for an ear infection. Mommy didn't know he was to have a hearing test and all 3 boys went with her. So, without any practice, Nicolas took the hearing test while Mommy waited with his brothers. He followed all of the instructions so well that the audiologist was able to get an accurate assessment of his hearing. |
 | | |
| Apr 25, 2005 | | Today Nicolas came into the kitchen to tell Mommy about his Thomas trains. "Come on, Mommy. Let me show you my really neat train tracks. Let's go!" Mommy followed him to the playroom. When they got there, Nicolas said, "See! Look at my train tracks. There's James and Gordon and we're going here and playing trains." How wonderful it was to witness such a burst of language! |
 | | |
| Mar 15, 2005 | | Nicolas had his first appointment with the dentist. (This is often a huge nightmare for kids on the spectrum and for their parents.) We prepared for the event by reading a book about it several times, and Mommy gave him a pretend checkup. Nicolas did fabulously!!! No tears or screaming. No covering his ears. He received x-rays, flossing, brushing (with a typical toothbrush) and an examination, and he took it all in stride. |
